Why do we learn? How do we learn? We learn for many reasons: interest, inspiration, necessity, love, compassion, etc. I think it's the how that gets us confused. I believe that learning should be exploration. When I taught my daughters how to balance on a bicycle, I let them explore the process and figure it out for themselves. Instead of adding training wheels and running beside them, I chose to remove the peddles and the cranks and let them scooter around on the bike. Instinctively, they would lift their feet to see how far they could coast. It just happened; they began to balance. I then put the peddles and cranks back on the bike and they took off. I did the preparation; they taught themselves.
I take this approach to teaching reading and writing to middle school students. The preparation is on me, the exploration is on them.
